Literature as Reparation

Righting a Wrong: Francophone Women’s Literature

In this course, we will read novels by francophone women authors from Africa (Véronique Tadjo from Ivory Coast and Scholastique Mukasonga from Rwanda) and from the French Caribbean (Maryse Condé from Guadeloupe). We will examine their relationship(s) with collective history and individual stories, and we will study in particular the role of literature and of the act of writing as a means to repair injustice(s) caused by extreme violence, death, or the flight of time.
