Instructed Second Language Acquisition
This course is designed to introduce the student to the hypotheses, theories, processes, and determinants of second language acquisition and the resulting teaching approaches and techniques (e.g., task-based language teaching, neuro linguistic approaches, communicative and action-oriented approaches). The course focuses on the concept of language and the types of knowledge supporting communicative competence and interlanguage development; individual learner characteristics (the role of cognitive styles, personality, skills); cognitive aspects of learning (the role of prior, implicit, and explicit knowledge, the role of learning and communication strategies); psycho-affective aspects of learning (the role of emotions, attitudes, and motivation). Throughout the course, explicit links will be made between theory and practical application in the classroom.
