Mod Lit & Visual Culture in LA

THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT IN GUADALAJARA

Modern Literature and Visual Culturei n Latin America

How do contemporary Latin American writers use, describe, and construct notions of color, space, and visuality in their fictions? What are some of the connections among writing and seeing and writing about seeing? How do modern works of literature represent visual perspectives and regimes of vision? How do genderized forms of vision manifest themselves through literature and what is their importance? To what extent cultural and fictional discourses intervene in the act of seeing? Given the rich visual culture that has existed in the region since pre-Hispanic times, the course will explore those questions in the context of modern interactions between literature and visual art. Readings by Rubén Darío, José Martí, Jorge Luis Borges, Alejo Carpentier, Octavio Paz, Clarice Lispector, Josefina Pla, Juan Villoro, Sara Sefchovich, and Guillermo Fadanelli, among others. (1 Unit)
