Heritage Language Pedagogy

Pedagogy for Heritage Language Speakers
In this course we begin by examining the dimensions and prior language experience of heritage language learners with the goal of optimizing heritage language pedagogy. We then explore the major tendencies of heritage language pedagogy, which include the following: sociolinguistic principles, critical language awareness, pedagogy of multiliteracies and task-based instruction. Students will explore the theoretical underpinnings and empirical support for each of these tendencies. The end of the course will address how to implement these approaches into designing a curriculum for heritage language learners that considers their affective and linguistic needs. (1 unit).
