During this course, students will explore themes that are key to understanding societies in France and Africa and the relationship between these regions:

- The evolving role of tradition (coutume) and its impact on modern societies;

- Women and leadership; changing place of women in business, politics, and evolving role in society;

- The role of culture in citizens’ daily lives, with an emphasis on West/Central francophone Africa and France. Reciprocal influence between France and Africa on a cultural level. How cultures influenced each other over decades, with an emphasis on current trends and cross-influences (including literary work, gastronomy, music, fashion and other art forms).

- The changing nature of Francophonie, a bridge/glue between our regions, in an increasingly English-speaking world.

- Evolution of economies, transitions and rise of digital economy in both regions.

- Formal and citizen/soft diplomacy between the two regions.
