FREN 3104

Beginning French I

Level 1 is intended for students with no or minimal previous experience with the French language. The course emphasizes development of a grammatical foundation and lexical and phonetic proficiency, with special attention given to the development of oral and listening skills, and written communication.

Classroom activities are varied and interactive and are focused on acquiring all four language aptitudes (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) simultaneously, and always in the context of a cultural narrative.

Free-form classroom interactions are balanced with structured grammar, vocabulary and phonetics drills. Level 1 is divided into five distinct and complementary sections: Grammatical Structures (3101 and 3103), Oral Production and Phonetics, with a separate communication workshop (3102), and Written Production & Comprehension (3104)

Classes adhere to a Flipped Classroom pedagogical model, whereby students are provided with the course materials and resources in advance, creating an active and collaborative learning environment. By the end of this seven-week immersion program, students will be able to navigate a variety of real-world situations, within the scope of the European level criteria A1 at a minimum.
