This course examines the diversity of religious thought and practice in the Greco-Roman world. After a brief treatment of early Greek and Roman religions, it will focus on the Hellenistic, late Republic, and early Imperial periods. Topics to be considered include: adaptation of early Greek and Roman "myths," sacrificial practices, the emergence of "oriental" religions, the Imperial cult, and critiques of religion. 3 hrs. lect.
