Post-Soviet Cinema

This course begins with the 1990s, when Russian cinema underwent great flux, resulting in new genres and cinematic language. We will examine films of the last decade of the 20th century and the two decades that followed in cultural context and from an ideological and aesthetic perspective. Required viewing includes films by representatives of both an older generation (Muratova, Balayan, Mamin) and a younger one (Segal, Zvantsova). By charting the course of contemporary Russian cinema from the 1990s, we will be able to speculate on how the industry may develop further. Counts as a course in culture and civilization.
