The Architecture of Planning
As the ‘front end’ of the architectural process, planning plays a significant role in shaping our built environment, from our dwellings to our cities, towns, and campuses. This course will introduce students to fundamental planning concepts such as open space and density, site relationships and context, and circulation of people, traffic, and services. We will examine case studies around the country and abroad, as well as local examples such as the Middlebury College Master Plan and the Middlebury Town Plan. No formal architecture experience is required, however students will be introduced to ways of graphically representing information and expressing ideas. Students will apply these principles and skills to several exercises, culminating in a final project involving field work in a team format. 3 hrs. lect.
