Land Use Planning & Env Review

Environmental review is the process of studying a development project and its potential impacts on the environment in order to avoid or mitigate those impacts. This course will provide an introduction to the knowledge and skills required to perform environmental impact analysis under the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. The course will begin with an overview of urban planning and local government configuration. From there, we will learn the basics of environmental review. In particular, we will address how potential impacts to air quality, water, wildlife, transportation systems, and other resources are addressed through environmental review. Taught by two practicing environmental planners, students will develop analytical techniques widely used in the planning profession. The course will include content on environmental review practices in other countries, but will primarily focus on how it works in California.
