Cybersecurity
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security maintains, “Our daily life, economic vitality, and national security depend on a stable, safe, and resilient cyberspace.” We will examine threats to the American way of life and consider competing strategies for combatting them. To understand our vulnerabilities, we will first consider how the architecture and security of the Internet have developed over time. Since cyberspace has no country, we will explore the conflicts that inevitably emerge when different governments assess the tradeoffs between individual rights and national security in different ways. Topics will include espionage, privacy, drones, malware, secure communication and authentication, Internet governance, and the flash points of conflict and cooperation between the intelligence communities and Silicon Valley. 3 hrs. sem.
