Place and Space in Japan

Place and Space in Japan (in English)
In this course we will take a practical and theoretical approach to understanding the concepts and significance of space and place in Japanese culture. How do ideas of power and status get mapped onto physical and geographical locations in Japan? We will develop new ways of understanding culture--Japanese culture in particular--by studying the categories used to discuss place and the practices for making and dealing with spaces. We will apply a range of theories and ideas from sociology, anthropology, and Japanese studies to make sense of place and space in everyday life. 3 hrs. lect./disc. (JAPN 0110)
