This course will begin with a survey of the history of translation. We will then discuss texts that are landmarks in translation studies and conduct a close examination of a number of translations. Through a comparative study of translations, we will then focus on the politics of translation, combining approaches drawn from gender theory, sociology, aesthetics, and philosophy. This course is designed for students with an advanced knowledge of French who are majoring or interested in French, English, or American studies, comparative literature, literary studies, or linguistics. It will be very useful to students contemplating a career in translation. (This course counts as elective credit towards the major in French)
