Sex and Sexuality: History, Culture, Politics
In this course we will explore how ordinary people make sense of their sexuality and how beliefs and practices toward sexuality change over time with a focus on the period since 1915. We will examine the relationship between sexuality and other social differences, such as gender, class, race, and disability. Finally, we will consider how experts-in religion, government, medicine, and the law-work to define and regulate sexuality. Historical subjects will be complemented by contemporary issues such as the sexualization of girlhood, sexual violence, and marriage equality. Readings include works by Foucault, Berlant, Chauncey, and Meyerowitz. Primary sources include novels, film, television, legislation, and medical literature. 3 hrs. lect.
